Hit-and-Run Driver Who Killed Greenway Cyclist Gets 1 to 4 Years
The hit-and-run driver who killed cyclist Olga Cook on the Hudson River Greenway is going to jail. On the evening of June 11, 2016, Samuel Silva hit Cook with a Ford pickup truck as he turned right from West Street onto Chambers Street. Cook, 30, was knocked to the ground and sustained fatal head and body trauma.

Uber Driver Injures Cyclist at Hudson River Greenway Crossing
A for-hire driver in an Uber cab injured a young man riding a bike on the Hudson River Greenway last week. The driver blamed the victim, and indications are NYPD did not conduct a full-scale investigation. The Taxi and Limousine Commission declined comment.

Trottenberg: Safer 111th Street “Tremendously Important” But Let’s See How CB 4 Votes
Days after a member of Queens Community Board 4 said a protected bike lane on 111th Street won't be necessary because undocumented immigrants will be deported, Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg called the project "tremendously important" but stopped short of saying the city will definitely proceed with it.

Queens CB 4 Member: No One Will Need Bike Lanes “Once Trump Removes the Illegals”
Ann Pfoser Darby, a long-time member of Queens Community Board 4, argued last night that 111th Street by Flushing Meadows Corona Park doesn't need a protected bike lane because Donald Trump will deport "all the illegals." City Council Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland is now calling for Borough President Melinda Katz to remove Darby from the board.

Port Authority Will Widen Bike Pinch Points Around GWB Towers
The Port Authority announced plans yesterday to add some breathing room for biking and walking around the towers on the George Washington Bridge. Currently the paths narrow and jog around the towers at tight angles -- the new "wedges" will make for a more comfortable ride.

There’s Still Time to Ask the Port Authority For Wider GWB Paths
On Thursday, the Port Authority board will vote on the agency's $32 billion, 10-year capital plan -- which currently does not include widening the walking and biking paths on the GW Bridge. The paths are much narrower than engineering standards recommend, and with cycling numbers increasing at a rapid clip, the space crunch will only get worse.

CB 7 Endorses Year-Round Parks Department Greenway Detour
Based on scant justification from the Parks Department, yesterday Manhattan Community Board 7 voted in favor of a permanent detour for cyclists along the Hudson River Greenway between 72nd Street and 83rd Street. Amendments to keep the main path accessible to cyclists during off-peak times either failed or were not considered, in part because board chairs Roberta Semer and Klari Neuwelt were in a hurry to finish the meeting.

Tonight: Testify Before CB 7 Votes on Riverside Park Greenway Detour
A late addition to the calendar: Manhattan Community Board 7 will vote on the Parks Department's proposal to route cyclists away from the waterfront greenway between 72nd Street and 83rd Street. If you want to preserve access to the flatter, straighter, better-lit waterfront path during the majority of the year when crowding is not an issue, tonight is the time to testify.
