To history’s list of epic negotiations, we may someday add the prospective deal to finance the Gateway Project between Newark’s and New York City’s Penn Stations. With two belligerent states, a disgraced Port Authority, and Amtrak and the federal government on the hook for Gateway’s $15 billion (and counting) expense, divvying up the cost will be contentious, to say the least. But the final equation will almost certainly include a rise in New Jersey’s stunningly low gasoline tax.

Amid Christie and Cuomo Raids, Port Authority Plans Huge Fare and Toll Hike
Crossing the Hudson River will get much more expensive under a proposed Port Authority plan to sharply increase tolls and fares on its four bridges, two tunnels and the PATH train. The increases are a result of the poor economy, the costs of rebuilding after the attacks of September 11, and the expensive repairs needed on the agency's aging infrastructure, said the Port Authority. Left unstated was the enormous cost of raids on the agency by the state governments of New York and New Jersey.

Schumer Calls for Increased Transit Spending, Slams Christie
In a speech at a Crain's breakfast this morning, Senator Chuck Schumer called for reinvesting in infrastructure, including repairs to New York's existing transportation system and new transit projects. Schumer also blasted New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for killing the ARC tunnel and for his proposal to use Port Authority funds to pay for maintaining New Jersey roads.

Christie Rewrites ARC History: My Wife Made Me Do It
Having killed the badly-needed ARC tunnel not once but twice, you'd think that Governor Chris Christie would at least have the decency to let the issue go. But no. He's got a whole new reason for opposing it. Now, apparently, the seed of the ARC's destruction came from Christie's wife Mary Pat, who was no fan of the deep-underground Midtown terminal.
