For First Time, NYC Will Fund Plaza Maintenance in Low-Income Areas
Since it launched nearly eight years ago, DOT's public plaza program has relied on a public-private model: The city funds plaza installation and construction, while local partners pick up the tab for maintenance and operations. This works well in some parts of town but is a more difficult proposition in low-income communities. Now, for the first time, the city budget will fund plaza maintenance in neighborhoods that could use additional help.

There are nearly 700 miles of elevated highways, rail lines, and bridges crisscrossing New York City. They tend to be dreary places, but they don't have to be. CB 7 Backs Caton Ave Safety Fixes After Lander Urges “Yes” Vote
Safety improvements for Caton Avenue in Brooklyn almost didn't get a thumbs up from Community Board 7 last night when a few people spoke against the loss of five parking spaces. But Council Member Brad Lander stepped in and urged the board to support the redesign, leading to a vote in favor.

De Blasio Signs Bill Requiring Side Guards on 10,000 Trucks by 2024
Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill yesterday requiring side guards on all large city trucks, and on private garbage trucks operating in New York City, by 2024. When a truck driver strikes someone with the side of the vehicle, the guards prevent people from getting crushed beneath the truck's rear wheels. They have been proven to reduce deaths and serious injuries where they are used.

Unless Albany Acts, NYC Bus Lanes Are About to Get Clogged With Cars
Five years ago, the state passed a bill allowing the city to install cameras that catch drivers who illegally use bus lanes on six Select Bus Service routes. Unless Albany acts soon, that legislation will expire and the cameras will have to be turned off at the end of this summer.
