Grate news from Uptown!
A longstanding hazard for cyclists is no more after the city covered a “bicycle-eating” grate on the Broadway Bridge connecting Inwood and the Northwest Bronx, according to local bike advocate Ed Ravin, who snapped the above photo over the weekend.
The hazardous mid-deck metal joint was known to trap bike tires and throw cyclists off their wheels. No more — a metal plate now allows for smoother sailing for two-wheelers.
Cyclists have complained about the movable bridge’s treacherous joints for “decades,” Ravin said — it not clear why the city Department of Transportation decided to act now.
Construction work on the bridge is not scheduled to wrap up until 2027, according to the city’s capital projects dashboard.
