We’re taking today off to celebrate Joey Chestnut’s inevitable 70 hot-dog-and-bun interpretation of our nation’s founding.

We’ll be back tomorrow, but until then, here are a few headlines to chew on while Chestnut makes history:

  • A trio of big transit hitters —including Friend of Streetsblog Bob Previdi — penned a Daily News op-ed in support of one more mammoth project: linking Penn Station and Grand Central.
  • Sure, don’t pass Sammy’s Law — but watch the destruction that occurs when people speed (and they do). (NYDN, NY Post)

  • Legendary pro-car columnist Tom Wrobelski (who lives on a low-lying island by the way) is now complaining that drivers might have to pay for the damage they do. (SI Advance)

  • Irony alert: On the same day that DOT announced its plans to redesign Ninth Street in Gowanus after the death of cyclist Sarah Schick, we spotted a sign indicating that a Tesla dealer was coming to the fatal corner:
