Cop Suspended for Trying to Run a Moped Rider off a Queens Highway

The NYPD officer caught on camera using his department-issued SUV to drive a moped rider off a Queens highway has been suspended, the NYPD said on Wednesday.

According to a spokesperson, who declined to give his or her name, “the officer is suspended without pay” and “the incident is under internal review.”

No other details were provided — and Streetsblog sought a raft of them: the officer’s name, his or her precinct, his or her prior disciplinary record, and whether the suspension was merely the first of more punishment for the reckless cop.

The incident has been under internal review since May 25, when Streetsblog broke the story of an NYPD officer swerving repeatedly in an effort to either strike the moped rider or run him off the road.

The announcement of a suspension comes days after another incident involving another violent police chase that apparently violates recommendations in the NYPD patrol guide.

In that June 9 incident, police in an SUV chased a moped rider for roughly two miles along the usually packed waterfront greenway in Bay Ridge until he crashed his moped into a pillar. That incident, cops said, was also under review.
