No Charges for Commuter Van Driver Who Killed Khavir Ahmed in Jamaica
A commuter van driver struck Khavir Ahmed a short walk from his home Tuesday morning, and Ahmed died the next day.
Ahmed, 84, was crossing 168th Place by 88th Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. when the motorist turned left from 88th and struck him, according to police. His address was listed right around the corner on 89th Avenue.
As the crash was described by police, Ahmed had the right of way, but no charges have been filed yet against the 32-year-old driver. The investigation by NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing.
Ahmed was at least the 17th senior pedestrian killed in New York City in 2017, according to data compiled by Streetsblog. People 65 and older make up just 13 percent of the city’s population but account for more than half of pedestrian fatalities this year.
Tuesday’s fatal collision occurred in the 103rd Precinct and in the City Council district represented by Daneek Miller.
