Pedestrian Ghana Ghalley Killed by Driver in Fordham on Wednesday
A pedestrian was killed by a driver Wednesday evening in the Fordham section of the Bronx.
According to a Daily News report, at around 5:54 p.m. 24-year-old Ghana Ghalley was in the crosswalk, apparently crossing University Avenue, when the driver of a westbound Ford van struck her while making a left turn from W. 190th Street. Ghalley was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The driver, whose name was withheld by NYPD, was issued summonses for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failure to exercise due care. As reporter Larry McShane put it, police charged the driver with “nothing more” than those two infractions for killing a pedestrian who had the right of way.
The intersection where Ghalley was struck saw seven pedestrian-involved crashes resulting in eight injuries between 1995 and 2009. Scores of pedestrians and cyclists have been injured and killed on surrounding blocks since the 1990s, according to Transportation Alternatives’ CrashStat.
This fatal crash occurred in the 52nd Precinct.
