Eyes on the Street: Pedestrian Haven on Hanson
Courtesy of Brownstoner, here's a recent shot of sidewalk construction between Flatbush Avenue and Hanson Place, near the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The short passage -- or slip ramp, as DOT calls it -- allowing cars to turn onto Hanson from Flatbush and Fourth Avenue is now closed to car traffic. This is especially good news for transit riders, who now have fewer vehicle conflicts to worry about as they walk to and from the Atlantic Terminal entrance.

Eyes on the Street: Cycle Track Construction Porn
There's a lot of protected bike infrastructure in various stages of completion right now, and I had the chance to take some pictures on the way to the office today. Above is a trench for part of the Sands Street bike path, the long-awaited Manhattan Bridge approach in Brooklyn that was originally slated to start construction in 2006. The middle of the road has been dug up from Gold Street to Navy Street. Someone on the crew said it will be a while before the project gets finished.

Eyes on the Street: Dyckman Bike Shelter Hints at What Could Be
Inwood recently got its first city bike shelter, by the A train station at the corner of Broadway and Dyckman/200th Street. It wasn't getting a lot of use when I snapped this shot, probably because it was Sunday morning. Still, in the couple of minutes I was there quite a few cyclists passed by, most of them on the sidewalk -- as many, it seems, don't consider Dyckman a safe place to ride.

The Tease Is Over: Greenway Link Delivers Delayed Gratification
We received two reports last night that the West Harlem Piers bike path -- a critical link in the Hudson River Greenway -- is finally open after several months of puzzling delay. (NYCEDC informed Streetsblog last week that the hold up was indeed due to problems securing materials for a safety rail.) Now the construction fence is down, and, as you can see in these photos from reader Paula Froke, cyclists are enjoying the unbroken stretch of greenway.

Eyes on the Street: The Beginning of a Beautiful Bike Lane
Snapped by Streetsblog regular Ian Dutton this afternoon: Crews prep Grand Street for the city's first physically-protected crosstown bike lane [PDF]. Stretching from Varick to Chrystie, the Grand Street cycle track features some new design touches on account of its placement on the right side of a narrow street. The guys on the crew say the finished markings will be in place by next Tuesday.

Eyes on the Street: MTA Trailer Planted on Broadway Sidewalk
For months, graffiti-laden MTA Capital Construction trailers have been parked curbside on Broadway north of Isham Street, in Inwood, presumably due to ongoing work on the A line. Yesterday we snapped this shot of one trailer's new position, on the sidewalk alongside Isham Park.
