Details of ‘Peak Rate Parking’ Coming Into Focus
Today's Times provides a look at DOT's plans to test out variable-rate on-street parking in Greenwich Village and along Kings Highway in Brooklyn. Following the lead of San Francisco and Washington DC, the pilot programs aim to free up on-street spaces and reduce cruising by raising meter prices during peak hours.

Bike-Share Coming to NYC? DOT Says It Will Test the Waters
After dropping hints that 'Free Bike Fridays' on Governors Island could serve as a prelude to something bigger, DOT today announced its intention to "explore the concept of bike share and investigate the feasibility of instituting such a program in New York City." The agency has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest [PDF] to determine what a bike-share program in New York might look like, and how it would function.

DOT Gives Its Regards to Broadway
Last night's Tony winners aren't the only newsmakers on Broadway these days. In May DOT quietly rolled out plans to give the city's premier north-south thoroughfare the livable streets treatment from Times Square to Herald Square (between 42nd and 35th Streets). The redesign replaces two car travel lanes with pedestrian plazas and a protected bike lane.

New Law Encourages DOT to Set Traffic Reduction Targets
Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg signed into law Intro 199, a bill requiring New York City's Department of Transportation to collect and monitor data specifically aimed at helping the city "to reduce automobile traffic and encourage more sustainable means of
transportation vital to combating congestion, pollution and improving the
City’s long term economic health." The new law could signal a significant change for a city agency that has typically measured its own performance based on how many potholes it fills, street lamps it fixes and how well it keeps motor vehicle traffic flowing through the city's over-burdened street grid.
