Over the past week, the long G train outage caused by flooding from Hurricane Sandy brought the need for changes to the Pulaski Bridge into starker relief. Streetsblog received multiple reports of extreme crowding on the bridge's narrow bike and pedestrian path, which could have been relieved with a protected bikeway across the bridge.

Joe Lentol to DOT: Pulaski Bridge Needs Protected Bike Lane
The narrow bike and pedestrian path across the Pulaski Bridge has long been a concern for bridge users and local residents. Earlier this month, Assembly Member Joseph Lentol hosted a meeting to air the issues and find a solution. Now, Lentol is asking DOT for a two-way protected bike lane on the bridge.

It’s Time for More Space for Bike Riders and Walkers on the Pulaski Bridge
The Pulaski Bridge, which connects Greenpoint and Long Island City across Newtown Creek, provides a narrow path for pedestrians and cyclists to share, next to six lanes of fast-moving motor vehicle traffic. As volumes have picked up on the path, minor tweaks made years ago may not be sufficient to provide space for interborough walkers and bike riders. It's a concern that's getting attention from elected officials.

DOT Plans Nine Miles of Bike Lanes For LIC, Sunnyside, With More to Come
Bike lane mileage in Long Island City and Sunnyside, Queens, is set to double next year, under a preliminary plan from the Department of Transportation, with significant expansions to follow in subsequent years. The nine miles of new routes -- along 11th Street, Skillman Avenue, 47th Avenue and 39th Street -- were selected in a community planning process convened earlier this year by Community Board 2 and City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.

Livery Cab Driver Kills Cyclist at LIE Overpass, No Charges Filed
A livery cab driver struck and killed a cyclist in Long Island City early this morning, as first reported by DNAinfo. The motorist was not charged with any crime, said an NYPD spokesperson.

Queens CB2 Asks, “Where’s the Bike Lane?” And DOT Adds One to LIC Plan
When DOT presented plans for traffic calming along Long Island City's 44th Drive in March, the department chose to put the four lane street on a road diet, using some of the reallocated space for a painted median. That still left enough space in the extra-wide parking lanes for a bike lane, however, a fact which Queens Community Board 2 pointed out at the time.

Road Diets But No Bike Lanes for Two Queens Traffic Calming Projects
DOT presented plans for two Long Island City street redesigns to Queens Community Board 2's transportation committee last night. One, a standard road diet, would calm traffic on 44th Drive by replacing one moving lane in each direction with a painted median and left turn bays [PDF]. The other, a novel design for a single block of 48th Avenue, manages to make four of six lanes into on-street parking [PDF].
