DOT crews have made significant progress this week on a project to improve bike access to the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn. Striping and plastic bollards for a two-way bike lane on South 4th Street are now in place.

DOT Has Closed the Queensboro Bridge Bike/Ped Path Overnight for 16 of the Past 24 Months
The Queensboro Bridge bike/ped path has been closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for 16 of the last 24 months while ConEdison conducts electrical repair work. Currently, a six-week closure that began on May 21 is making nighttime trips especially difficult for working cyclists. Despite the regularity of the closures, DOT still hasn't worked out a reasonable alternative for people who count on overnight access to the path.

During the L shutdown, the MTA plans to run shuttle buses at rush hour connecting Williamsburg to Manhattan. Some sort of transit priority treatment is on the table for Brooklyn streets where buses connect to the bridge, but what DOT has in mind isn't clear.

The Delancey Street approach to the Williamsburg Bridge bike path is slated for a two-way bike lane linking to Allen Street, as well as an eastbound connection from Chrystie Street.

DOT Has a Fix for the Crummy Bike Connection Between Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge
The big change in DOT's plan is a two-way section of bike lane protected by a concrete barrier on Park Row, plus a short contraflow lane on Spruce Street. It's not a lot of bike lane mileage, but it's a key link in the network that will be dramatically improved.

At Brooklyn Community Board 1, DOT will present a plan to improve bicycle connections on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge, including protected bike lanes on the blocks approaching the bridge's bike path.
