NYPD Is Ticketing More Drivers for Speeding on Neighborhood Streets
NYPD is issuing more speeding summonses this year than in 2013, and data show a substantial jump in the number of drivers ticketed for speeding on neighborhood streets. While the numbers represent an increase from the baseline, it will take a lot more summonses for enforcement to be commensurate with the scale of NYC's reckless driving problem.

Traffic Violence Victims’ Families Call on Klein, Senate to Back 25 MPH Bill
Families of traffic violence victims gathered with advocates and elected officials this morning to ask State Senate leadership to lower New York City's default speed limit from 30 to 25 mph. The families are hoping key Senate leaders will introduce and pass a companion to the 25 mph Assembly bill sponsored by Speaker Sheldon Silver before this year's legislative session closes out in just over a week.

For Cooper’s Law to Work, NYPD Must Change Its Approach to Traffic Crashes
One of the most substantive traffic safety bills passed by the City Council Thursday was Intro 171 -- “Cooper’s Law” -- which allows the Taxi and Limousine Commission to suspend or revoke hack licenses of cab drivers who cause critical injury or death as a result of breaking traffic laws. The effectiveness of the law, however, depends on NYPD, which often does not ticket drivers involved in serious crashes.

All Eyes on Senate as Families for Safe Streets Push for Lower Speed Limit
Yesterday, five members of Families for Safe Streets were joined by Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg in Albany to build support for a bill to lower the city's default speed limit to 25 mph. Advocates say Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is set to sign on as a sponsor, while City Hall and advocates continue to aim for support in the State Senate, potentially from Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein.

Police Seek Hit-and-Run Driver Who Ran Down Pedestrian on Sidewalk
Via Gothamist: Early Saturday morning, a driver ran over a pedestrian on the sidewalk in Astoria inflicting serious injuries, then sped off, continuing to drive on the sidewalk. Police told Gothamist that the victim suffered a broken leg and concussion, and they're looking for help locating the hit-and-run driver.

No Mention of Cab Safety Tech as TLC Commish Outlines Vision Zero Budget
Mayor de Blasio's Vision Zero Action Plan contains a number of initiatives to improve cab driver safety, including "black box" technology to monitor cabbie behavior. TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi told the City Council in early May that the agency has issued RFIs for a telematics pilot program, but she didn't mention the program during testimony at Thursday's council budget hearing.
