DOT Proposes Safer Walking and Biking Connections to Highland Park
A dangerous street that connects Glendale to Ridgewood Reservoir, Highland Park, and two cemeteries is in line for traffic-calming and safer bike lanes thanks to a request from the local police precinct. Cypress Hills Street has a divided median and highway-like curves that do little to prevent motorists from speeding - it's an obstacle to good walking and biking access, despite its buffered bike lanes.

DOT Shows Its Plan to Get the Reconstruction of Fourth Avenue Right
Fourth Avenue is far and away the most viable potential bike route linking Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and Park Slope, but it's still scary to ride on, with no designated space for cycling. At 4.5 miles long, a protected bike lane would make the reconstructed Fourth Avenue one of the most important two-way streets for bicycle travel in the city, connecting dense residential neighborhoods to jobs and schools.

Queens Boulevard Safety Overhaul in Rego Park Clears Community Board 6 Committee
Last night, the public got a look at the next phase of DOT's Queens Boulevard redesign, which will extend protected bike lanes, pedestrian safety improvements, and traffic calming treatments through Rego Park to Yellowstone Boulevard. The project got a thumbs up from the Queens Community Board 6 transportation committee in a 7 to 3 vote.

Making It Safer to Walk or Bike to Van Cortlandt Park By Taming Broadway in the Northwest Bronx
Despite its proximity to Van Cortlandt Park, Broadway north of 242nd Street feels like a highway. Two years ago, Council Member Andrew Cohen asked for safety improvements, and last night DOT presented a plan to narrow crossing distances and add a two-way protected bike lane along the park.

NYC DOT Plans Protected Bike Lane for 24 Blocks of Seventh Avenue

Karen Koslowitz Walks Back Her Pledge to Support a Safer Design for Queens Boulevard
Two years ago, Council Member Karen Koslowitz stood with people who'd lost loved ones to traffic violence and said the city should do "whatever it takes" to turn deadly Queens Boulevard into a "boulevard of life" -- even if that entailed the removal of travel lanes or parking spaces. Now that the city is ready to redesign Queens Boulevard in her district, however, Koslowitz is losing her resolve.

Van Bramer Calls for Protected Bike Lanes on 43rd Avenue in Sunnyside
After two crashes in ten days at the same Sunnyside intersection left one cyclist dead and another in critical condition, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer is calling on DOT to take immediate action and install a protected bike lane on 43rd Avenue between Queens Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue.
