In Harlem, Bradhurst Plaza Supporters Struggle to Change Status Quo
Manhattan Community Board 10's transportation committee ended months of foot-dragging this week by backing a road diet for Morningside Avenue in Harlem. It's not quite a brand new day at CB 10 though: A community effort to convert a short, irregular block into a public plaza still has an uphill climb at the Harlem board. While there's a substantial local coalition backing the project, a cadre of outspoken opponents use the existing street as a drop-off zone for their apartment building and don't want to see any changes.

Morningside Ave. Road Diet Set for July After CB 10 Chair Urges Support
With new, clear marching orders from chair Henrietta Lyle after nine months of stalled deliberations, Community Board 10's transportation committee voted unanimously last night to support a road diet plan [PDF] for a speeding-plagued stretch of Morningside Avenue. Pending expected support from the full board next month, DOT is scheduled to implement the safer street design in July.

Speed Limit Bills Shift to 25 MPH, Allow DOT to Designate 20 MPH Streets
With Mayor de Blasio, the City Council, and families of traffic violence victims lining up behind lowering the city's default speed limit from 30 to 25 mph, Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell and State Senator Martin Malave Dilan said this afternoon that they are amending their speed limit bills. Instead of establishing a 20 mph default speed limit and requiring the City Council to pass laws to designate exceptions, the bills will now drop the default to 25 mph and allow DOT to lower the speed limit to 20 mph on a case-by-case basis.

Council and Advocates Unite Behind 25 MPH Limit to Pass Bill in Albany
In an effort to pass a bill in the state legislature this session to reduce the city's default speed limit, the City Council and street safety advocates are uniting behind the de Blasio administration's call for a 25 mph limit. In a unanimous 9-0 vote this morning, the City Council Transportation Committee passed a resolution supporting a 25 mph limit. It is expected to pass at the City Council's stated meeting this afternoon.

After Quick Work by CB 7 and DOT, Safety Fixes Debut at 96th and Broadway
After the deaths of Cooper Stock, Alexander Shear, and Samantha Lee at or near the intersection of 96th Street and Broadway shook Upper West Siders in January, DOT promised fixes to an intersection that locals complained had become even more dangerous to cross after a reconstruction project just a few years before. This morning, the city debuted those changes, including an expanded pedestrian island and new crosswalk.
